Rice Prep Hockey

At POLARIS Student Athlete Consulting, we believe that the best environments for student athletes are those that support quality training, elite competition, and exceptional academics. That’s why we’re excited to spotlight Rice Memorial High School’s Prep Hockey Program in South Burlington, Vermont. With dedicated programs for both boys and girls, Rice’s holistic approach to student athlete development provides meaningful opportunities for growth, on the ice, in the classroom, and beyond.

Academics That Match Ambition

Rice Memorial High School offers a rigorous, student-centered academic experience built on proven strategies and personalized support. With an average class size of 15 and a total student body of around 400, Rice strikes the perfect balance between individual attention and a vibrant school community.

The school uses traditional A–F grading which provides clarity for students, families, and colleges, while offering leveled classes that meet students where they are while challenging them to grow. With 17 AP courses, 16 Honors classes, and the prestigious AP Capstone program, Rice is one of only two schools in Vermont to offer this elite research and writing curriculum. Academic pathways are thoughtfully sequenced, especially in STEM and sciences, giving students the foundation they need to thrive in college and beyond.

A Unique Model for Prep Hockey

Rice’s Girls’ and Boys’ Prep Hockey Programs take player development to the next level. The Rice Knights Girls’ Prep Program competes at the highest level, blending prep school matchups, USA Hockey Tier I club competition, and games within the North American Prep Hockey Association (NAPHA). This dynamic schedule allows players to compete for both league and national championships, all while avoiding the game-count limitations seen in many traditional prep leagues.

The Boys’ Prep Program is equally forward-thinking, offering student athletes the chance to play 50+ games per season through the MPHL, against New England prep schools, and in top-tier showcases. Whether players are eyeing Junior Hockey, NCAA competition, or professional opportunities, Rice provides a strong launchpad.

More Than a Team: A Program Built on Values

Rice athletes are challenged to excel on and off the ice. The program emphasizes:

  • Leadership and character development

  • Academic accountability and time management

  • Community involvement

  • Mental performance training

  • Sport-specific strength and conditioning

  • Proper nutrition and recovery habits

Student athletes are treated like college athletes from the start. By receiving detailed travel itineraries, managing structured routines, and learning to balance rigorous academics with elite competition they develop a professional-like approach to the game. It’s a first-class experience built to prepare students not just for the next level, but for life.

An Elite Training Environment

Rice’s partnership with Cairns Arena, just two miles from campus, offers student athletes a state-of-the-art training facility featuring:

  • Two NHL-sized rinks

  • Seating for over 1,000 spectators

  • A modern, dedicated Rice Prep locker room with 23 personal stalls, showers, and amenities

  • On-site snack bar, pro shop, and equipment resources

This environment mirrors the infrastructure of collegiate and professional programs, giving Rice athletes a competitive edge in both development and exposure.

A Launchpad for Student Athlete Success

At POLARIS, we believe that authenticity, preparation, and alignment between academics and athletics are key to student athlete success. Rice Memorial Prep Hockey is doing just that—developing student athletes who are ready to lead in the classroom, on the ice, and in the community.

Whether your student athlete dreams of competing at the NCAA level, earning an AP Capstone Diploma, or growing as a leader, Rice Memorial offers the resources, structure, and support to help make it happen.
